What I’ve learned from road trips

Tips and Key Aspects for a Safe and Memorable Journey

Hitchhiking is more than just a way to travel for free — it’s a unique way to connect with people, embrace spontaneity, and explore the world off the beaten path. Whether you’re new to hitchhiking or looking to refine your approach, here are some essential considerations and tips to keep in mind.

Safety First

Your well-being is the top priority. Always trust your instincts — if a driver or situation feels off, politely decline the ride. Share your route and location with friends or family, and carry a charged phone with emergency contacts saved. Avoid hitchhiking after dark, especially in remote or unfamiliar areas.

Choosing the Right Spot

Your location can make or break your chances of getting picked up. Ideal spots include:

  • On-ramps to highways
  • Petrol stations and rest stops
  • Outskirts of towns (away from heavy traffic zones)

Make sure you’re visible, and that drivers can safely pull over. A clear roadside shoulder is essential.

Signage Helps

Holding a cardboard sign with your destination (or next major town) can improve your odds. Keep it simple, readable, and friendly. Even a smiley face or “thanks” can increase your chances of a ride.

Dress and Behavior

Dress neatly and avoid looking threatening. A friendly, open posture and a smile go a long way. Make eye contact with drivers, and use a confident thumbs-up gesture.

Travel Light

Keep your belongings minimal and organized. A backpack with essentials — water, snacks, maps, a power bank, and weather-appropriate clothing — is ideal. Remember, you might need to walk long distances between lifts.

Patience and Positivity

Sometimes you’ll wait 5 minutes; other times, hours. Stay calm, optimistic, and respectful. Carry a book or music to pass the time, but remain alert and attentive to passing cars.

Cultural Awareness

Hitchhiking is more accepted in some countries than others. Research local attitudes and laws beforehand. In some places, it’s common and safe; in others, it might be illegal or discouraged.

Connect with the Driver

Small talk can go a long way. Be polite and grateful. Offering stories, asking about the area, or simply listening shows appreciation — it’s part of the exchange that makes hitchhiking special.
